LENA visits the Wolmirstedt substation

26.01.2026 -

On January 23, 2026, students enrolled in the “Fundamentals of Electrical Power Engineering” module visited the Wolmirstedt substation operated by transmission system operator 50Hertz. The excursion gave participants the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the theoretical content of the course through practical insights.

At the beginning, the students were welcomed in the substation's recently occupied main building. In an introductory presentation, 50Hertz introduced itself and provided an overview of its role as a transmission system operator, its supply area, and key figures and facts about the extra-high voltage grid and the energy transition. In addition, the tasks and significance of the Wolmirstedt site in the interconnected grid were explained.

This was followed by a detailed tour of the substation. Participants were introduced to the most important operating equipment and its functions within the overall system. This included circuit breakers and disconnectors, combined instrument transformers, power transformers, and other components of the switchgear. In addition, the students gained insights into the automation and relay protection devices and had the opportunity to witness a switching operation during ongoing operation.
