LENA visits ENERCON in Magdeburg

01.07.2026 -

On June 26, 2026, students from the Department of Electrical Networks and Renewable Energy at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, together with staff from the Department of Electrical Energy Storage Technology at Clausthal University of Technology, visited ENERCON’s production plant in Magdeburg.

The Magdeburg site holds a special position within the ENERCON Group: it serves as a center of excellence for generator manufacturing. While wind turbines were manufactured in their entirety at the site until a few years ago, production has focused exclusively on the manufacture of generators for the past several years.

The tour focused on the production of three generator platforms that reflect ENERCON’s current and future product portfolio. The insights into the production of the new flagship model, the E-175 EP5 E2, were of particular interest. The E-175 EP5 E2 is ENERCON’s most powerful model, with a rated output of 7.0 MW and a rotor diameter of 175 meters, making it one of the highest-yielding onshore wind turbines in Europe. From an electrical engineering perspective, the generator’s design is particularly noteworthy: Like all ENERCON turbines, the E-175 EP5 E2 uses a permanently excited synchronous machine, but in an external rotor configuration, in which the rotor surrounds the stator on the outside. This design enables a compact build while delivering high torque. The international market launch of the E-175 EP5 E2 is currently in full swing.

The field trip provided an excellent opportunity to deepen students’ understanding of course material in the areas of electrical machines, wind energy, and electrical grids through hands-on experience. The LENA Chair would like to extend its sincere thanks to ENERCON for the open and informative tour, as well as to Prof. Ines Hauer and Clausthal University of Technology for jointly organizing this successful field trip.
